A holiday in Vienna

About 3.5 million people of all nationalities annually visit the beautiful Austrian city Vienna. Vienna presents itself with its own unique charm and character. A city closely linked to its ancient history, and which has numerous monuments of architecture and culture, waits to present its sights to tourists. Vienna is also a green city with a nice countryside that is perfect for those seeking relaxation. A walking tour will guide you through narrow, winding streets and typical courtyards. Long shopping streets downtown with their luxurious shops seduce tourists to spend more money than planned.

The huge amusement park, the Prater, is definitely a must for Vienna tourists as well as for Viennese inhabitants. A ride on the famous Ferris wheel gives you great views of the city. Particularly noteworthy is also the landmark of Vienna, the Stephansdom (St. Stephens cathedral). The church was dedicated to St. Stephen, who was also the patron of the bishop’s cathedral in Passau, and so was oriented toward the sunrise on his feast day of 26th of December, as the position stood in the year that construction began. The cathedral is 107 meters long, 40 meters wide, and 136 meters tall at its highest point. Originally the church had a white colour, but over the centuries soot and other forms of air pollution have given it a black color. The pillar figurines, altars and pictures testify to the creative work of artists who played designated roles in the formation of the great cathedral.

Schönbrunn Palace will delight you with its enchanting castle gallery. The Schloss is a very popular tourist destination today with often long lines for entrance. In addition to tours, many classical concerts featuring Mozarts music can be enjoyed with the added benefit of more time in the spectacular halls, Orangerie, or Schlosstheater. The garden axis points towards a 60 meters higher hill, which since 1775 is crowned by the Gloriette structure.

Combine a visit of the castle of Schönbrunn with the “Tiergarten Schönbrunn”, the world’s oldest existing zoo (founded in 1752). Today Tiergarten Schönbrunn is considered as a scientifically administered zoo which sees its main purpose as a centre for species conservation and general nature conservation. The still preserved buildings of the baroque era, which have been complemented in the last years by elements of modern zoo architecture, convey still a good impression of the 18th century menagerie-buildings.

When you visit the Spanische Hofreitschule, you can see world-famous performances of the noble horses of the Riding School. During a vacation in Vienna a city tour or a guided walk through the city is recommended. The beautiful Danube River invites you to boat trips. Vienna is also the start of a longer boat trips on the Danube. Maybe you want to approach Bratislava on the Danube?
